In the remote mountains of Colorado, horrors wait inside Mount Massive Asylum. A long-abandoned home for the mentally ill, recently re-opened by the “research and charity” branch of the transnational Murkoff Corporation, the asylum has been operating in strict secrecy… until now.
Acting on a tip from an anonymous source, independent journalist Miles Upshur breaks into the facility, and what he discovers walks a terrifying line between science and religion, nature and something else entirely. Once inside, his only hope of escape lies with the terrible truth at the heart of Mount Massive.
Outlast is a true survival horror experience which aims to show that the most terrifying monsters of all come from the human mind.

In 2013, expectations of horror were a bit low, competing with the likes of Resident Evil 6 and Dead Space 3, Outlast comes along and boom it's the scariest game ever. Is it still the case? IMO, no. While fun and technically solid, the game doesn’t live up to the scare factor it critically received. Gameplay wise, it's strictly a hide and seek formula that is much more amplified than prior games of this genre. Tension building starts out strong and develops into an organic horror experience to remember. The constant fear of being surrounded by psychopaths is paranoia inducing and very effective. But by the second half of the game, the lack of restraint in random gore splattered everywhere and the hostiles design choice as they chase you around, starts to deteriorate, losing its novelty. Story wise, it's very interesting but certain elements introduced near the end further diminishes that horror factor. Overall, Outlast is an enjoyable claustrophobic tense experience with an interesting plot and great sound design that makes me look past its flaws. Recommended for a quick playthrough for the non-desensitized.
