What are the differences between CS:GO and CS2? Let's check it out!

There is no other game that hides so many stories, emotions, memories, and rivalry. We are talking about the well-known Counter Strike, which has recently been released in a completely new version. Is it worth playing CS2? How is it different from its predecessor CS:GO? Let's check it out!

Let's start with the fact that the latest gem from Valve Corporation has been fully available since September 27, 2023. That's when all players could enjoy the new game, not just watch the gameplay on YouTube or on streams on Twitch. It's worth mentioning that Counter Strike: Global Offensive, the earlier version of the game, has been available since 2012, amounting to a total of 12 years on the market. This is a really impressive result considering the gaming market.

Shine Bright Like a Diamond, new graphics on CS2

The first thing that you will notice is the graphics. In a new game, it is obvious that it has to be better and here you can feel a real glow up, which makes Counter Strike 2 look really good. What is the reason for this? In the previous game, we are dealing with the Source engine. On the other hand, the latest CS has the Source 2 engine, which gave the creators many possibilities. Work on this technology was going on for a long time before the premiere of the cult title from Valve, hence the creators' readiness for new challenges. Source 2 is the engine that we can find in games like Dota: Underlords, Half-Life: Alyx and Artifact.

Going back to Counter-Strike 2 itself, it's worth mentioning that the game has new weapon models, characters, and completely refreshed maps that we know well from the game. Fans of the game pay attention to the AWP shot effect. We have not only smoke, but we also see a speeding bullet aimed at the enemy. And what about smoke grenades? There is a big change here too. The smoke coming from the grenade looks completely different and you can interact with it in some way. We can shoot through the smoke which in effect makes us see a small fragment, but also disperse it with shrapnel grenades. And what about skins? We know this is important to you. There are also graphical improvements here. The weapons really look very good. You can see the attention to detail. All-New Sounds

The game's audio has also been refreshed. The creators have made sure that everything sounds much more modern and realistic. Valve has learned its lessons in this area. We also have a new soundtrack in the game, which we can hear in the main menu, during gameplay, and also during the climactic moment when the last player from a team is left on the scene. Additionally, the bomb itself also has new sounds that change as time goes on. This also contributes to better immersion. Overall, it's impressive.

It seems to be a bit easier

Counter-Strike 2 seems to be designed with new players in mind. Its predecessor required a lot of practice to master a weapon. Here, we have a definitely different weapon feel, sometimes more precise, but also smoother. Mouse movements on the screen seem to be more fluid, and it's not about FPS, but the gameplay itself. The difference in gameplay is noticeable almost immediately after starting the first match.

New Item shopping system

Valve has decided to move away from the circular shop where we had almost all the weapons in the game at our disposal. This was the case in Counter Strike: Global Offensive. Here we have everything in front of our eyes without choosing individual categories. In total, we have 34 weapons in the game, not counting knives. Interestingly, we only have 15 slots in the store. We cannot add more or remove them from the shop. It always must be 15. However, we can change store contents before the game. All this in the equipment menu. An interesting feature is the introduction of the possibility of selling purchased weapons. There are situations where, wanting to save time, we buy equipment quickly and a mistake happens. Now we can sell an item that we bought by mistake and get the collected funds back.

New Game-In Interface

The game, after going through a series of cosmetic changes, has also received an interface update, which seems to be more minimalistic, clear and therefore more intuitive. While on this topic, let's also mention the game's main menu and graphic design. We are not talking about a revolution, but rather delicate changes and improvements. You could even say that after turning on the game, we see a lot of similarities, but the logistics of the entire menu are more thought-out than its predecessor and recent updates in this segment.

What about optimization?

Let's be honest, the optimization in CS:GO was well thought out. We could play these games on many devices without having a lot of power. There were no issues with limitations. The optimization of CS2 from the very beginning of the beta showed that it is not at the highest level. Players who want to play the new Counter-Strike smoothly must reckon with the fact that it is a demanding production. Let's take a closer look at it.

Minimum requirements Windows:

  • Processor: 4 hardware CPU threads - Intel® Core™ i5 750 or higher
  • Memory: 8 GB RAM
  • Graphics: Video card must be 1 GB or more and should be a DirectX 11-compatible with support for Shader Model 5.0
  • DirectX: Version 11
  • Storage: 85 GB available space

Minimum requirements Linux:

  • OS: Ubuntu 20.04
  • Processor: 4 hardware CPU threads - Intel® Core™ i5 750 or higher
  • Memory: 8 GB RAM
  • Graphics: AMD GCN+ or NVIDIA Kepler+ with up-to-date Vulkan drivers. Support for VK_EXT_graphics_pipeline_library highly recommended.

Cobblestone & Train

Players are very optimistic about the future development of Counter-Strike 2. They are excited about the new maps that will add a new pace to the game and also provide more variety and freedom. The developers have shown players the maps that are currently available, proving that they are putting a lot of work into this aspect of the game.

There is no denying that players are eagerly awaiting the Cobblestone and Train maps. There are certainly plans for this, as part of the CS community has thoroughly searched the game files, which clearly indicate that we are to receive this.

No shortage of problems…

Unfortunately, as is the case with new titles, there are some problems that we hope will be solved soon. Currently, as of April 2024, there are problems with the anti-cheat system, which is doing much worse than in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. There is also no indication of the "Overwatch" mode, which allowed other professional players to check the gameplay of potential cheaters.

The Wingman mode also leaves a lot to be desired, due to the map selection. There are definitely fewer of them than in the predecessor. Here we count on the fact that the work is still ongoing and in the near future there will be a greater variety.

Currently, there are also no modes such as Danger Zone, which referred to the currently popular Battle-Royale genre. Since the premiere, we have not waited for any operations that had not only skins, boxes, etc., but also missions that we could play in cooperation with other players. It was a nice touch, even adding a bit of a story atmosphere to this well-known shooter.

Let’s talk more about maps. There is no denying that players are eagerly awaiting the Cobblestone and Train maps. Good news! There are certainly plans for this, as part of the CS community has thoroughly searched the game files, which clearly indicate that we are to receive this. One thing that has to be admitted is that the maps that we currently have in the game are very polished.

Fun Fact

Valve, knowing that players loved the chickens that move around the map during the game, decided to joke around a bit. In the latest Counter-Strike 2, chickens can swim in water, which was not possible in Global Offensive. A small touch, but it's nice. It's cool that the developers also have a sense of humor.

The CS scene has been expanded with another game that will set trends, but also provide a lot of excitement not only in the comfort of your own home, but also during the biggest tournaments around the world. The game itself introduces many new solutions that have a real impact on the gameplay. The graphics of the new Counter-Strike look really good, and the gameplay and feel of the shooting is much more modern, and therefore smoother. The creators have a lot of work to do on improving this new gem, but everything indicates that it will only get better.

Unlike the early stages of its predecessor, Counter-Strike 2 is free to play. However, if you want to take your gameplay to the next level, you can take advantage of the Prime Status upgrade, which you can find on Kinguin.
