Few Words About Number 12

Twelve (why not twoteen?) is the atomic number of magnesium in the periodic table. The 12th moon of Jupiter is Lysithea. There is also a character named Twelve in Street Fighter.

As you can see it is not an ordinary number. Ok, just kidding - it is just a number like any other. Then why I'm wasting my and your time to read about it? One word - Titanfall.



On January the 7th (why not 12th?) Vince Zampella from Respawn studio informed via twitter that maximum amount of players on the same map in Titanfall multiplayer is... yes, exactly.



We didn't have to wait long - 2 minutes after post the tsunami of negative comments appeared. I have to admit that I was one of the posters. That was because I also like to switch off my brain from time to time like most of internet haters.

Think about this. 12 is pathetic number. Even in new CoD (that wasn't so good) you have battles 9v9. It is 50% more than in the most wanted game of 2014! And Battlefield 4? 64 people at the same time! 533%! And this is game from previous year(and wasn't so good either). Shock, disbelief, anger. The Titan falls even before release.



I am ashamed of my initial reaction, because what does really this number tell us? Nothing. Zampella said later than this number was chosen after many test because:

a. it is the best solution when there are AI characters on the map
b. the game is coolest with such number of players

Reaction of Respawn was fast. Justin Hendry also said that with AI opponents on the map (up to 24) and autonomously moving titans there can't be more players to avoid the mess. Also remember that Titanfall wants to break classic rule of 2d battle fields and gives us possibility of running on the walls or using jetpacks.



To sum up. Finally there is a company that wants to add fresh blood to the genre and give players something more than classic duel between CoD and BF. Not only bypasses the rat race of increasing maps and adding "new" game modes that are just weird variation of something we already have, but also is trying to put the player in the environment different than modern conflicts. But haters gonna hate. Because number 12 hurts them, humiliates, destroys their childhood dreams. Left 4 Dead have 4v4 and is it bad? If Respawn would create Titanfall as a classic FPS, stick to the rules established by only two most played games of this genre the haters would scream that this is only Call of Duty with Mechs or Battlefield with jetpacks.

And we have stalemate situation. From one hand gamers complaint that games stoped evolving and are just coping the form from previous parts that decided about the success of the genre, but from the other when someone is trying to add something new (or remove, doesn't matter) they send him the Patriot Missile up in the a**.



Maybe we should stop this war and rethink our behavior? Game will be released in 2 months and if it will be crap - I will be the first to throw the rock. But only after testing it. So calm down and ask yourself a question that is really important:
