Company of Heroes 2 is Here!

You are a commander of the Soviet army and are just about to partake in the bloodiest conflict of WW2 starting in 1941 and ending with over 14 million casualties it is up to you to guide your fellow comrades to victory in the deadliest theatre of war. The Eastern Front.

Lately there has sadly been a drought of WW2 RTS’ and WW2 games in general. Thankfully, Company of Heroes 2 releases tomorrow and will bring an end to the aforementioned drought. Whilst the first CoH focussed on the Americans, the Commonwealth and the Germans (the two latter coming with the Opposing Fronts DLC) Company of Heroes 2 perspective changes towards the Russian contingent.

The first Company of Heroes heralds a lot of praise as one of the greatest RTS’ ever created and I can see why, the first one is so finely balanced and holds an atmosphere of actually being in a deadly warzone not seen since Command & Conquer: Red Alert. Red Alert was my favourite RTS of all time until I got my hands on the first CoH. I used to play a lot of Red Alert with my Dad and was sure no RTS would ever come close to the amazing Red Alert but somehow CoH did just that and probably destroys it in many aspects, especially in the atmosphere department.

As you may be able to decipher from the previous paragraphs I am very excited for the sequel to my favourite RTS of all time. The Russian perspective of things is of particular interest to me as I find Soviet Russia a very interesting place in WW2, with the brutal Order No. 207 commissioned by Stalin which permitted superiors to shoot deserters on the spot a favourite topic of mine.

When tomorrow arrives I know I shall be there on the frontlines with my comrades defending against the enemy invaders.

For the Motherland!
